The Papacy can now look back on nearly 2,000 years of history. Even at an early stage, the institution was already developing far-reaching claims to spiritual and secular leadership. Klaus Fitschen provides a concise account of the development of the Papacy from its origins to the present day. Following a historical introduction, he discusses examples of some of the outstanding Popes. These are followed by thematic chapters & for example, on the influence of the Popes within the setting of the City of Rome and the not undisputed issue of their legitimacy. Fitschen succeeds in offering a concise, well-founded, easily readable and vivid insight into the multifaceted history of the Papacy.
