Perceiving, Imagining, and Managing Maritime Risks in Ancient and Early Modern Worlds

This is the first comprehensive analysis of Southeast Asian globalization and development since 1870. Interpreting over 150 years of Southeast Asian economic history, Gregg Huff traces the impact of a first period of globalisation from the 1870s to 1929, the effects of Japanese occupation during World War II and its aftermath, and a second wave of globalisation since the late 1960s. He uses vent-for-surplus, dual economy and plural society concepts and argues that the response of those in Southeast Asia to periods of transport revolutions, innovation and opportunity in the world economy translated into rapid export-led growth. Recent swift growth enabled Southeast Asia to start to 'catch up' with the world's leading countries for the first time in its history. Achievements include industrialization, genuine social progress and numerous large urban regions. Nevertheless, the book contends that Southeast Asian development in its 'miracle economies' remains incomplete.

For two centuries, multinational enterprises (MNEs) have arrived in waves on Australia's shores. Highly visible and influential household names among them -Ford, IBM, Kodak, Electrolux, ANZ - but also many smaller, lesser-known enterprises. Foreign MNEs in Australia today account for almost half of our top 2000 firms and control over A$1.4 trillion of assets. There is much we do not understand about these important institutions, why they chose to invest here, how they entered, and why some firms survived for long periods, but others exited.The history of MNEs, more than most topics, is inextricably connected to international experience. Across half a century of research, their history has emerged as a vibrant field of investigation in North America, Europe and, increasingly, Asia. MNE activity in Australia, briefly referenced in some of these studies, formed an important part of the global presence of many firms. This is the first history of foreign MNEs in twentieth-century Australia, filling a major gap in the economic and business history literature of Australia and of the history of international business globally. In recent years, scholars from many disciplines have contributed to the literature on the 'proper' role of markets but they often overlook the contribution of many economists who have also called for a broader understanding of the market beyond pricing. This book explores the place of the market in the history of economic thought, from the origins of neoclassical economics onwards, and looks at what has been written about the role of markets in promoting cooperation and trust.The first part of the book explores the debate about markets among those British economists who shaped neoclassical economics. Two eras are distinguished, each with its own story of the market. The first era runs from Henry Sigdwick to Alfred Marshall, and from the laissez-faire approach to Keynes' interventionist policies. The second era highlights the scarcity and efficiency-approach of Philip Wicksteed and Lionel Robbins, which laid the groundwork for the neoliberalism of Hayek and Friedman. The second part of the book explores the possibility for a new story of the market after fundamental beliefs about the market have been questioned, not least by the excesses and drawbacks of the neoliberal market. Clues for such a story may be found in efforts to expand on the basic ideas of analysis - such as human agency, the context and driving forces of economic action - challenging foundational elements of Robbins' scarcity approach.
