Der Fuß auf dem Kopf eines Pharaos: Die Statue Jean-François Champollions im Ehrenhof des renommierten Collège de France ist zum Stein des Anstoßes geworden. Um 1870 von Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi geschaffen - dem Bildhauer der Freiheitsstatue von New York -, ist ihr Bildprogramm widersprüchlich: Erdacht als heroisches Denkmal des Willens zum Wissen, liegt über ihr zugleich ein tragischer Schatten, der auf Champollions krisenhaftes Weltbewusstsein verweist. Gefeiert für die Entzifferung der Hieroglyphen und eine neue Geschichte der Menschheit, machte Champollion zwischen 1827 und 1829 bei Begegnungen mit Angehörigen der nordamerikanischen Osage-Nation in Paris und während seines Aufenthalts in Ägypten prägende Erfahrungen mit kolonialer Gesellschaftszerstörung und Kulturtod, die eng mit jenem Verständnis von Weltwissen verknüpft waren, dem er selbst Aufstieg und Ruhm verdankte. Champollions Zweifel und sein Handeln werfen Fragen auf, die Markus Messling zum Ausgangspunkt nimmt, um über unseren Umgang mit dem Erbe des Kolonialismus in Europa nachzudenken.&nbsp;

Mit dem reichen Vater öffentlich brechen, die Kleider eines Bettlers anziehen, in absoluter Besitzlosigkeit leben: Franz von Assisi zog in seinem Glauben an Jesus alle Register. Bis heute fasziniert er, weil er sich nicht schonte, sondern seinem Herzen kompromisslos folgte. 1948 ergreifen während gewaltsamer Auseinandersetzungen in Haifa Tausende Palästinenser die Flucht. Ein Ehepaar wird durch unglückliche Umstände von ihrem fünf Monate alten Sohn getrennt. Sie versuchen erfolglos, zu ihrem Haus und dem Kind zurückzukehren, und bald wird die Grenze zum neu ausgerufenen Staat Israel geschlossen. Erst zwanzig Jahre später betreten sie Haifa wieder. Ihr Sohn Chaled lebt noch in ihrem Haus, doch er trägt eine israelische Uniform und heißt Dov. Er wurde von jüdischen Einwanderern adoptiert. Eine Rückkehr zu seinen leiblichen Eltern lehnt er ab, da er sich seinen Adoptiveltern und Israel mehr verpflichtet fühlt als Blutsbanden. 
Ghassan Kanafani wirft existentielle Fragen auf: Hat die Abstammung oder die Erziehung größere Bedeutung? Was bedeutet Heimat? Ähnlich wie in Brechts "Kaukasischem Kreidekreis" geht es darum, wem das Kind gehört. An empirical analysis and new theoretical framework for understanding economic expectations and decision-making in different historical settings. Expectations play a crucial role in shaping economic behavior. But how are expectations actually formed, and how has this changed over time? The financial crisis of 2007–08 cast doubt on traditional theories of expectation formation, particularly the rational expectations framework. In Contingent Expectations, Alexander Nützenadel and Jochen Streb examine the ways that past experiences influence the economic expectations and decision-making of households, investors, and policymakers through history, and offer an alternative perspective. Combining a comprehensive empirical analysis of expectation formation from the eighteenth century to the present day with an assessment of the relevant economic theory, Nützenadel and Streb present a new theoretical framework, contingent expectations, for understanding economic expectation. Nützenadel and Streb show how economic actors developed new forecasting methods in response to rising uncertainty brought on by the Industrial Revolution, the expansion of global trade, financial market integration, and environmental crises. Tracing the evolution of economic theories on expectations, they find that when growing market volatility made forecasting more complex, economic agents often adapted with remarkable flexibility to changing circumstances. Challenging prevailing concepts of expectations, including rational choice and adaptive expectations, Nützenadel and Streb emphasize the heterogeneity of economic agents’ cognitive practices—in particular, the need to consider variation in information costs and historical experience. Expectation formation, they argue, is contingent on each individual’s current decision-making situation. Their account of the history of economic expectations has significant implications for current debates in economics.

This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other.&nbsp;It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically. Patrick Bond is a political economist and professor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent more than two decades teaching at the Wits University School of Governance in Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society in Durban. During the late 1980s he pursued doctoral studies in economic geography at Johns Hopkins University, while learning politics in the anti-apartheid, labour, student and community movements. In 1994 and 1996, he worked in the Reconstruction and Development Ministry in President Nelson Mandela’s office, drafting the democratic government’s first White Paper and a dozen other major policy documents. He appears more than 100 times a year on South African and international broadcast media, and usually gives more than 50 guest lectures annually.
