Routledge Research in Media Law

This book is a comparative study of state-based censorship laws and practices in the Asia Pacific region.It provides crucial historical context for each of the common law traditions in Malaysia, Australia and Hong Kong - all former British colonies - and compares it to the tradition of civil law and the lèse majesté law in Thailand. The book sets out to analyse the approach to film censorship of four Asian-Pacific countries. It does so largely from a doctrinal perspective, reviewing each country's legal history and impact on the local film industry. Chapters detail censorship practices in each jurisdiction; key opinions and issues within individual states, and conclude with options for judicial review and insights relevant to the Malaysian film industry. The book also contains interviews with prominent film practitioners and censorship authorities. Their range of opinions contextualise the doctrinal research and demonstrate the effects of film censorship on artistic vibrancy and commercial viability of the film industries.With its comparative approach to exploring how censorship and state regulation impacts local film industries, this book will interest scholars of film studies, Asian studies, and media law.

Richard Schickel's study of Billy Wilder's 1944 noir classic Double Indemnity traces in fascinating detail the genesis and realisation of the film: its literary origins in James M. Cain's hard-boiled crime novel, the difficult relations between Wilder and his scriptwriter Raymond Chandler, the casting of a reluctant Fred MacMurray, and the late decision to cut the expensively filmed execution sequence from the final release. Schickel places Double Indemnity in the context of early 1940s Hollywood and the emergence of a new kind of crime thriller that later became known as film noir. The film was a cornerstone of the genre: its script creates two unforgettable criminal characters, the cynically manipulative femme fatale Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) and the likeable but amoral Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray). Billy Wilder's direction enmeshes them in dramatic chiaroscuro, as bright California sunlight casts Venetian-blind shadows across dusty rooms and harsh lamplight slices through the night. Gladiator II: The Art and Making of the Ridley Scott Film

Guru Dutt's final film as a director, Kaagaz Ke Phool/Paper Flowers (1959), follows the successful film-maker Suresh Sinha (played by Dutt himself) as rumours of his affair with his actress Shanti (Waheeda Rehman) lead him to lose his family, descend into alcoholism and ultimately retreat from the film industry. Initially met with critical and commercial failure, the film is now revered for its technical prowess and considered one of the finest self-reflexive works in Indian cinema. Lalitha Gopalan explores Kaagaz's innovative visual style, being the first Indian film shot in CinemaScope, highlighting cinematographer V. K. Murthy's essential contribution. She also analyses the soundtrack, composed by S. D. Burman with lyrics by Kaifi Azmi, examining the now-classic picturisations of songs such as 'Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam'. Drawing on interviews with practitioners and people close to Dutt, Gopalan reconstructs the original contexts of the film's production and reception.
