Examining the emergence and development of the Far¿h¿ school of thought and its methodology, this book explores the four case studies of stoning, apostasy, hijab, and the return of Jesus.It demonstrates the reforming Far¿h¿ approach and divergence from traditional Islamic thought, tracing Far¿h¿ scholarship through the years, from Hamiduddin Farahi to Amin Ahsan Islahi and Javed Ahmad Ghamidi. Through the case studies the author analyses Far¿h¿ approach to the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and religion. For each case study, he looks at contested areas and critically reviews traditional approaches, evaluating various sources, including the Qur'an, Tafs¿rs from both Sunni and Shia scholars, ¿ad¿ths, and where applies Fiqh, before moving on to discussing the Far¿h¿ approach, including interviews with Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, the present academic leader of the approach. Each case study ends with comparative analysis, leading to extracting the methodological features of the Far¿h¿ school of thought at the end of the book. The book closes with a critical discussion of the methodology of the Far¿h¿ school of thought and a summary.The Farahi School and Reformist Islam is the first academic work to go beyond the Far¿h¿ school's theory of Qur'anic coherence, aiming to derive its methodological features through original analysis and a case study approach. It will appeal to advanced students and scholars of Islam, particularly those interested in Qur'anic exegesis and Islamic jurisprudence. This book investigates the availability in Asian jurisdictions of civil remedies against multinational businesses for human rights abuses. Various means have been developed in Europe and elsewhere to hold businesses accountable to victims for human rights abuses. Techniques include legislating due diligence requirements for companies operating abroad, broadening court jurisdiction to include foreign companies having subsidiaries within a country, expanding international jurisdiction, promoting universal jurisdiction, and implementing international conventions and sanctions. On the 15th anniversary of the 2011 UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the book assesses whether the norms of the UN Guiding Principles have taken root in Asia, which has only had a mixed record for upholding human rights. The book first considers the international state of play in the field. It moves on to case studies of corporate governance and human rights in Asia (especially Japan, South Korea, India, Thailand, and the Philippines). It then examines emerging issues (environmental damage and climate change, crimes against humanity, and compliance programs and corporate criminal Responsibility), and considers how Asia has dealt and can deal with corporate responsibility in connection with those matters. By way of conclusion, the book offers an action plan for implementing the UN Guiding Principles in Asia.

Multinationals and Human Rights in Asia

Nafeesa T. Nichols analyzes how racialized and gendered spaces are presented in post-apartheid South African literature. Through the examination of four novels, Kopano Matlwa's Coconut (2007), Zukiswa Wanner's The Madams (2006), Niq Mhlongo's After Tears (2007), and Kgebetli Moele's Room 207 (2006), Popular Spaces in Post-Apartheid Literature highlights the interconnections between space, race, gender, and popular culture within the post-apartheid South Africa. Nichols not only explores how post-1994 literature attempts to represent the realities of the post-apartheid condition, but also reveals the innovative and radical contributions that these young authors of the early twenty-first century made within the literary world. This book mediates the dynamics and complexities of space in connection to race and gender, exemplifies the challenge of working with and in violent masculinist textual spaces, and conceptualizes the popular in connection with class, race, and gender struggles. Drawing on an interdisciplinary mix of Black feminist theory, feminist geographical perspectives, and spatial theory, Nichols provides a close reading of each of the selected texts, offering broader insights into the how Black subjects navigate various spaces of oppression. Through these novels, she shows how we are able to imagine the possibilities of liberatory spaces, celebrate local knowledge, creativity, the popular, and, most importantly, the beauty and resistance found in the everyday. In the end, this book contributes to the academic conversations that continue to take place surrounding gender, space, literature, and liberation in South Africa.
