Great Theologians Series

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology emerged from the intersection of several contesting streams of the Protestant tradition: high theological liberalism, and the 'Luther renaissance' and 'dialectical theology' movements of the early decades of the 20th century. It is marked by consistent and intense engagement with the Bible read as Christian Scripture and so centred upon Jesus Christ. To appreciate Bonhoeffer's theology requires that we grasp his commitment to Christ as the self-communicative presence of the living God whose identity and agency determines not only Christian life and thought, but all of reality itself. Bonhoeffer's theology continues to influence the direction of contemporary Christian life as well as provoke serious theological reflection wherever it is engaged. Examining Bonhoeffer's theology as a whole, this book points readers to the essential concerns of Bonhoeffer's theology with an eye to the varied careers this theology has had since his death. Following an introductory discussion of his life and literary legacy, Part One considers Bonhoeffer's christology, arguing for its decisive significance to his vision of the nature and tasks of Christian theology. Part Two traverses Bonhoeffer's thought, treating in turn his ecclesiology, anthropology and ethics, and Christian politics. Exploration of each of these themes is deepened by examining the reception and impact Bonhoeffer's theology upon the intense church struggles of the last half of the 20th century, particularly those within the former East Germany, North America, and South Africa under apartheid

Popes and the Papal Court, 1503-1655 is the first book-length account of the early modern papal court in English. As well as bringing together art historical, social, and political studies in several languages, it contains a wealth of primary source material, such as advice manuals for cardinals and aspiring courtiers, accounts of Roman festivals, reports of visiting ambassadors and news reports from Rome deposited in the Vatican library. The book argues that during the 16th and 17th centuries, popes were conscious to varying degrees of their responsibilities to conserving and enhancing the status of the monarchy as something larger than themselves as individuals or their families, and as such they exhibited some characteristics of dynastic monarchies. Toby Osborne explores how the culture of the papal court and the ways in which it functioned as a point of contact between the ruler, certain elites, and other princes not only had similarities with dynastic states, but also set the standard for court life around Europe. By bringing to light recent scholarship written by continental historians, Popes and the Papal Court, 1503-1655 represents an important contribution to the scholarly endeavour to better understand the political culture of the papal states and the workings of the papal monarchy. As such, it will be illuminating reading for all students and scholars interested in early modern court history.

As Africa's foremost epic poet, Mazisi Kunene occupies a unique place in history. In this study, Dike Okoro illuminates the penetrating insights found in Kunene's poetry and the reasons why his art has been considered as masterpieces grounded in geography, history, and culture. He situates Kunene as a theorist who embraces African tradition - including his adoption of izibongo, Zulu praise poetry - and the role of the artist as a chronicler of his people's history, committed to art as a catalyst for change, not justd South Africa but for Africans around the globe.
 
 These essays and interviews address the post-apartheid reality of South Africa and draw from a repository of rich images found in Kunene's poetry to provide examples of depictions of colonial exploitation in Africa; the rootedness of traditional African culture; women and children who bring hope; and art as a way to effect change.
