A Historical Atlas of Tibet

A Historical Atlas of Tibet

Contenu

Tibet s first historical mention appears in Ptolemy s Geography, under the name batai. Despite the incredible rise of Tibetan studies and interest in Tibet far beyond the academy, this is the first atlas to chronicle Tibet s history in maps. The atlas introduces readers to the history of Tibet and Tibetan culture, religion, and indigenous polities in relation to the surrounding civilizations of East, South, and Central Asia. It provides a comprehensive global picture of this history from pre-historical times to Tibet s annexation into China in the 1950s, and then brings the work to the present, with maps that outline resources and the current population of Tibet. The atlas acknowledges Tibet s own central position and perspective as a civilization in its own right, in all its historical geographical complexity. Maps focus on the evolution of polities from kingdoms and principalities to the kingdom of the Dalai Lamas, and also capture religious history through the mapping of the diffusion of Buddhist temples and monasteries over time. It features 49 original, full color maps by the authormany of which will spread across two pagesas well as numerous smaller inset maps, text boxes, and photographs.
This is an essential reference for anyone interested in the history and present of Tibet, from travelers to Buddhists to scholars working on the region or its religions.
