Published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name, Black Gold showcases recent and newly commissioned artworks reflecting on the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of African Americans who lived in California during its early statehood, from the Gold Rush in 1848 to the Reconstruction era.The project highlights figures and events often omitted from California's history, including the presence of slavery and the struggle for legal rights within this "free" state, the successes of Black entrepreneurs, and the experiences of the African American army regiments known as the Buffalo Soldiers.Black Gold brings together an essay by the exhibitions curator, Cheryl Haines; an artist roundtable discussion moderated by Key Jo Lee, chief of curatorial affairs and public programs, Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA; new and archival materials addressing California's hidden history of slavery and anti-Black legislation; and texts detailing the contributions of each of the exhibitions artists—including&nbsp;Akea Brionne, Demetri Broxton, Adrian L. This volume draws together a selection of high-quality presentations at the 13th International Bonhoeffer Congress held in January 2020 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The theme of the conference was "How a coming generation is to go on living? Bonhoeffer and the response to our present crisis and hope." The selected essays engage thoroughly and creatively with this concern to take responsibility not only for our own personal and communal life in all of its complexity and richness but also for the ethos and society that future generations will inherit from us. The pertinence of Bonhoeffer's question is addressed in these contributions anew as we experience threats on a global level to socio-political, economic and inter-religious stability and solidarity. Attention is also given to some important challenges experienced in the so-called global South, and the reality of climate change and ecological devastation implies that the question of how future generations are going to go on living is linked to the fact that we live on a planet that is in jeopardy. This book examines 'womanhood' and 'race' not only as disputed, converging, and constantly changing categories and lived experiences, but also as interrelated and unequal subjectivities and social realties that shaped all early-twentieth century Puerto Ricans. It empirically documents just how significantly 'womanhood' and 'race' were inextricably intertwined in Puerto Rico between 1914 and 1945, a decisive period in U.S. expansionism and in the transformation of this island. Through a comparative analysis and description of specific subjects in early-twentieth century Puerto Rico—mostly Puerto Ricans from different races and social classes, but also some North Americans as well—the book demonstrates the extent to which 'womanhood' and 'race' are a more thorny, volatile, and unstable than is commonly acknowledged within Women’s History and Caribbean Studies. This is the first book that examines the relationships between women in Puerto Rico from divergent social classes and racialized positions by mostly focusing on the socioeconomic and racial inequalities among colonized women in Puerto Rico. This is in marked contrast with most Women’s History globally which mainly concentrates either on the lives of elite women or, at best, on the unequal relationships between colonizer- and/or European-descended women vis-à-vis colonized- and/or non-white women. In this book 'womanhood' and 'race' are not seen as separate, nor as already given, historically and culturally immutable 'things.’ Those are some of the lacunae this book transcends, primarily in the case of white-Creole women relative to non-white Island women and the images socially constructed of them in Puerto Rico, as well as for racially located Puerto Ricans more broadly. Within this context, the book enables a different reading of already known documents while demonstrating the importance of examining unused or forgotten bibliographical sources, some of them previously untranslated.Gladys M. Doolittle and Heim examine the complex interplay between modern medicine, religion, and spirituality. Medicine and religion share many concerns: suffering and illness, healing and well-being. The biological model of illness empowers medicine to bring dramatic improvements in physical health. At the same time, modern medicine often ignores the spiritual needs of patients and deeper challenges of holistic healing. In turn, religious institutions have always supported people through suffering, and often pioneer the delivery of health care to those in need. However, religious convictions sometimes conflict with medical perspectives; and some forms of religious belief and practice may be injurious to health. Each side can stereotype the other---medicine as sterile and unfeeling, religion as irrational and injurious. This book draws upon broad resources of Biblical theology, history, and contemporary thought to explore questions of faith, the role of the church, the lived experience of illness, and the modern practice of medicine.
