This book offers a Gramscian sociological analysis of the electoral rise and 'fall' of the British National Party (BNP) in the Outer-East London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Through a critical evaluation of the political-scientific theories that have so far dominated attempts to explain the electoral performance of far right parties, this book will assess the significance of the relationship between political parties and wider civil society.With reference to no fewer than 162 ethnographic conversations, 31 in-depth interviews with local voters and 18 months of political ethnographic observation, Rise and fall of the British National Party: A sociological perspective stresses the importance of how voters negotiate the objective structural, cultural and political conditions in which they find themselves. With up-to-date, relevant discussions of the politicisation of issues such as ‘race’ and ‘nation’, as well as the political terrain after the 2010 and 2015 general elections, the book demonstrates how class identification is a powerful feature of BNP supporters’ disassociation with mainstream party politics. Does judicial accountability have a valid place in ending corruption and augmenting rebuilding of the shattered state? Dave Benjamin offers a thoughtful polemic intended to provoke discussion about how to bring justice to peoples who are disenfranchised by kleptocracy, and who seek justice that would hold those who have plundered their countries judicially and criminally responsible for their actions.

The international community is at a critical juncture. Although efforts are being made by intergovernmental and international non-governmental organizations to prevent and stop corruption, its effects have been felt in many post-colonial states where the ability of the state to meet the needs of the citizenry has been severely compromised or crushed. Does judicial accountability have a valid place in ending corruption and augmenting rebuilding of the shattered state? Dave Benjamin offers a thoughtful polemic on the application of norms of international criminal law to the prosecution and prevention of kleptocracy. Intended to provoke discussion about how to bring justice to peoples who are disenfranchised by kleptocracy, Benjamin examines events in Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Liberia, and Somalia and posits that kleptocracy needs to be classified and prosecuted as an international crime to punish kleptocrats and their associates; secure the return of resources and assets to the states and peoples from which they were stolen; and act as a deterrent to future kleptocrats. This book examines two main themes which had national significance in eighteenth-century British Methodism. First, the interaction between the two distinct theological expressions of Methodism; Calvinist and Arminian. The 'parting of the ways' marks the first major split in Methodism as the differences of theological understanding changed into the demarcation of religious organisations. The core of the book will feature a series of case-studies which explore Calvinist and Arminian Methodists in a number of key locations, where competition and even religious take-over bids were used by John Wesley's movement to gain religious dominance. Secondly, the book explores the nature of John Wesley's leadership of his movement, and especially how the competition between the Calvinist and Arminian strands of Methodism made it necessary for Wesley to change the way he exercised his leadership and authority. This will be examined through Wesley's role as connexional leader and his relationships with individual preachers and society members. Hart also explores both the reasons his leadership changed over the period of the study and the impact these changes had in the local context. The book will explore how these changes were made necessary by the increasing size of his 'Connexion' and the attendant changes in the application of Wesleyan discipline especially on the itinerant preachers. Whilst much has been written about Wesleyanism, and more specifically about John Wesley as a religious leader, and there is now an increase of interest in George Whitefield and the Calvinist branch of Methodism. This book is unique in examining how the two affected each other at the local level. The book shows that, however united were the leaders of early Methodism even in their theological diversity, in promoting evangelical revival their unity was not strong enough to hold together the religious movements they founded.

Art’s obsession with politics is a problem, even a paradox. The more art there is, the less it shares with the political. Even the radical character of contemporary artistic practices revolves around the idea that there are no alternatives to liberal democracy and capitalist pluralism without risking another dystopia – a paradigm that, in the artistic realm, is articulated as the opposition between modernism and postmodernism. Indeed, with three recent transformations of our understanding; of emancipatory politics; the nature of aesthetics; and the post-Fordist transformation of capitalism, many argue that we overcome the fundamental challenges of aesthetic and political modernities and encounter ‘things’ beyond power relations and beyond aesthetics. However, even at its most creative, art has more in common with hegemony than capitalism. At every hegemonic turn, artwork is directed against itself, only to reinstate another art form in order to continue. This book looks at the problem of hegemony from an aesthetical perspective and argues that there is a ‘hegemonic trap’ pointing us in the direction of the alteration rather than alternative. Julia Svetlichnaja asks: Can art become hegemony? What is proposed is not Paolo Virno's ‘exit', it is the ‘exit’ from thinking about the ‘world-making’ in terms of alternative. What if instead of searching for alternatives we perform an alteration and pluralise modernism? The aesthetic project of the alteration of hegemony through the pluralisation of modernism does not represent hope for a better, different, political order but a space for problematisation, overlapping and contaminations of a number of social orders. The idea is to think about the world not in terms of ‘alternatives,’ but in terms of their absence.
